Eco Council

At Spring Grove we believe it is vital for children to understand and learn about the environment. Aizah and Emel are our elected Eco-Councillors who have attended meetings throughout the year to learn more about this. The meetings raise environmental awareness and discusses the things we can do as a school to improve our school environment. We provide many learning opportunities that empower children to lead change and have a positive impact on our wider community. We encourage children to engage and protect our environment.

Our Year 1 Summer topic has been about the Seaside. We took part in cross-curricular work, learning about the effects of plastic in our oceans. We learnt some shocking facts about littering and plastic pollution and how to reduce our waste by recycling. We have learnt about what we can reduce, reuse and recycle at school and at home. I have been very impressed with their attitude and responses during our important discussions about this ongoing issue. It is an area we are concerned about but want to learn more about so we can make a difference and improve the planet we live on.

We watched educational videos about how waste ends up in the sea – we were shocked that this is due to human behaviour! We showed empathy towards the sea creatures and designed some plastic pollution posters to raise awareness to stop this. We have a much clearer understanding about what littering means and the effect this has on our environment and wildlife. Children at home have been given the opportunity to reuse items to complete art projects and the outcomes have been effective. We look forward to continuing to extend our knowledge and engage in new learning opportunities about this worldwide issue when we all return to school in September.

Recycle, Recycle, Recycle.
