Year 3

At the start of the year, children in Year 3 continue to group read with an adult with a colour coded book matched to the group’s ability.  This carries on throughout the Autumn Term for all children. By Spring Term, most children have the ability to read independently and with understanding.  At this point we introduce Strand based teaching to the whole class to give children the skills to be able to answer comprehension questions on a variety of texts. This occurs 4 times a week.  For children who still need that little bit of extra support to build reading fluency, group reading still takes place.

To encourage the love of reading, the children select their own reading book from the reading trolley at a level matched to their ability.  They have ERIC time (Everyone Reading In Class) and they visit the school Library every Wednesday where they choose their own library book. The children also have class stories read to them which are linked to the topics being studied. Some children also share a reading book with our Reading Friends who come into school every Wednesday afternoon.
